Summer is here on the Peninsula, and the weather is heating up. With temperatures reaching their peak, Alta Citizen wants to show you the best options near Newport News for keeping cool.

1. Beach Day, Everyday

It’s not summer without a trip to the beach! A quintessential summer activity, hit up one of the many beaches in the Newport News area for a day spent lounging on the sand with the water calling out to you to take a dip. Some of our favorites include Huntington Park, Yorktown Beach, and First Landing State Park.

2. Visit a Museum

There are a number of historical museums in Newport News — all of them a must-visit. Stay cool inside browsing the sights, while learning a little bit, too! The Mariners’ Museum, Peninsula Fine Arts Center, U.S. Army Transportation Center, Virginia Living Museum, and Lee Hall Mansion top the list.

3. Become a Foodie

Take advantage of the warmer days to check out some new eateries and bars in our city. For your sushi fix check out Thaijindesu, offering a large menu with a sushi bar and outdoor dining. Vintner’s Cellar Winery & Restaurant in Yorktown is home to delicious steak, seafood, and housemade wines. And when you’re ready for a cocktail, check out Ironclad Distillery, for the best in bourbon and whiskey.

4. Get Your Groove On

Have some fun with live music and entertainment close to home with several concert series’ happening this summer. There’s hardly a shortage of free music, which makes it even better, right? The Summer Concert Series at the Smithfield Times Lawn is a community favorite, held every Friday at 8 p.m. Boathouse Live also has plenty of concerts lined up featuring the best of the best. For a full list of live music happening in our area, check out this calendar.

5. Hit Up The Pool

Well of course you can just plan a summer day at home! Alta Citizen’s courtyard pool is ready for you to sunbathe, dip, and relax away. There are several other public swimming pools you can venture out to as well, like Brittingham-Midtown Community Center and Doris Miller Community Center.

6. Become a Park Aficionado

We’re pretty lucky to live among a sea of excellent parks, trails, and bodies of water in Newport News. Hit the shady trails or take a late afternoon or evening picnic at a nearby park. Riverview Farm Park is close by with walking trails and a large playground with picnic areas all around. And you can’t miss out on a visit to the Mid-Atlantic’s largest water park, Water Country USA, a fan-favorite.
