Still a kid at heart? Maybe you want to relive your PE glory days? Or perhaps you’re just in it for the postgame drinks? Well, you’re in luck. Channel your inner child with any number of adult sports leagues in Newport News, VA, and the greater Hampton Roads area. Gather your friends and get those competitive juices flowing.Whether you prefer something traditional like rec softball, a PE staple like kickball, or something a little more offbeat like field hockey, there’s a league for you right in Alta Citizen’s backyard. Here are a few of our favorites:
No game stirs up the nostalgia quite like kickball. The game that filled our elementary school recesses and lunch breaks has become a popular pastime for adults in recent years. Join in on the fun. Grab at least 14 of your closest friends and sign up for Kickball League of Hampton Roads’ summer league. The $50-per-player registration fee includes perks like a free T-shirt, postgame drink and food specials at a sponsor bar, and mid- and postseason parties. Registration for the summer season kicked off April 15, and the eight-game schedule runs from June until August. You’ll play one game a week. And, just like in the NBA, everyone makes the playoffs!
Rec league softball. It’s the mother of all adult sports leagues. Get your team together and hit the diamond. Dust off that glove, dig through the closet for that old pair of cleats, and play ball! The registration deadline for Newport News Parks and Recreation’s spring league has passed, but its fall league starts in August and runs through November. Both coed and men’s leagues are available, and games are held at Stoney Run Athletic Complex in Newport News. Keep an eye on the NNPRT site and its Facebook page for details as August nears.
Want to try your hand at field hockey? Thanks to Newport News Park and Recreation, you can. Teamwork is everything in this fast-paced sport, which is affectionately referred to as “landhockey” in Sweden. Gather your troops and get a team together. Registration opens May 1. Watch for updates on the NNPRT site and its Facebook page.
